When we were in high school, people kept using words like "sick" and "ill" to describe things that they thought were especially cool. In our Calc III class, we were graphing some super weird-looking graphs, and Austin suddenly exclaimed, "What a sick looking parabola!" And we all cracked up because he meant that they looked diseased, but Austin would probably have meant that they looked really cool too. Then two weeks later, we brought it up and our whole math class was giggling (and Dr. Metz too) and Austin tried to defend himself by saying, "I meant that they looked ill!!"
Austin, you were one of the smartest, purest people I've ever known. In Science Olympiad, we all looked to you for judgment calls and advice. You were the heart--the rock--of our team, and it was such a blessing to have known you. Losing you is so unfair to our world, because you are one of a kind. I know that if you had more time here, you could have changed the world so much more than you already did.
I also still remember in middle school when you guys won Science Bowl Nationals and you were shorter than your trophy. We'll miss you, Austin.
