It is wonderful to read such fine stories of Austin as a brilliant, compassionate and connected young man. My memories of Austin go back to the Summer of most likely 2005 at Lake George, when as a young lad of about 12, he impressed us all with his already distinct interests and proficiency with words, the sciences and nature. I recall the discussions of his interest in weather, and I can clearly picture his shining, intelligent face, and the smile which he already seemed to so easily and quickly display. We are combing the family members for pictures of that time together to post.
I also have to share how humbled I am with the dignity, decency and love displayed during this tragedy by Gregg, Laurie, Aidan and Leigh. We were all hanging on every news update, and after sending the breaking news to everyone I knew in Chicago, I eventually got a call Wednesday at about 8:30am from a friend in Chicago, with that numbing news. Please know that we have been with you all along. All l can say is that Austin would be so proud of how his family responded and acted.
I’ll end with a tribute to Austin as I am so reminded of the time when we lost my Mom…... I was sitting on a sofa with my Aunt Margie and we were both just weeping together. My Uncle Donald, the Minister, sat down with us and, with his arm around me, announced “HE takes only the best; scoundrels like you and I, Marge, will always be around.”
We’ll miss you, Austin…..”one of the best”…..
