I first met Austin in the third quarter of our first year at UChicago. He switched into my Honors General Chemistry lab section, and it was immediately apparent that he was one of the smartest students there. One day after we finished a lab early, I caught up with him as we were leaving Kent and asked him about his family and his interests. We spent the next two and a half hours filling each other in on our lives while walking clockwise around the island of trees, flowers and grass in the middle of the main quad. I knew I had seriously lucked out in getting to know him: here was a guy who loved hiking, national parks, all the sciences but especially biochemistry, and didn't like partying? I resolved to become best friends with him.
