We will remember Austin as a kind, friendly, and exceedingly intelligent student whose generosity had no limits to assist and cooperate with every one of us. Austin’s intellect and maturity were ahead of his academic time. Austin, your friendly smile and the memories will be with us forever. It was a blessing sharing the summer of 2011 with you. You always will be remembered and missed.
Austin had been working with me in the lab for almost one month before he went to UC in July, 2010. No doubt he showed many qualities of a good scientist: smartness, being logical and thoughtful, and self-motivate. More impressive to me was that always smiled and delighted. He was one of the most modest and gentle teenager I have ever seen. Even he bowed slightly to show his respect and attention when we started a conversation. He always got my thoughts right away, and did the work beautifully. I feel so regret I did not take a picture of him when he was working in the lab. But I would never forget his smile.
Like the butterfly effect, the gentle, caring nature of Austin with his ever present smile spread to motivate and reassure those around him. His love, his passion, his kindness lives on through those he touched.
Thus, as the soft breeze was stirred by his presence and carried in the rustle of the leaves it spread to touch many faces that smiled in response to the caressing touch. Laurie, Gregg and Aidan--the outpouring of love is a but a small reflection back to you of all that Austin was to the world he impacted in so many ways. His brilliance and scintillating though unassuming nature will forever be an example for all of us to live by. Love and hugs to you all! Dear Laurie,
Your colleagues at College of Pharmacy are deeply saddened to hear about the loss of your son Austin. We are thinking of you, crying with you and we will be here for you in this difficult period. “A child has no real knowledge of the attainments of an adult. An ordinary adult cannot understand the attainments of a learned man. In the same way, an educated man cannot yet understand the experiences of enlightened saints or Sufis.” Al-Ghazali, a Sufi Scholar Austin's mother, Laurie, is a colleague, friend, incredibly generous, insightful mentor, researcher, and one of the most amazing people I know at UNM. I didn't know Austin, seeing him only once at what appeared to be a roaming family gathering at Costco years ago when he was still hanging on to the sides of the cart! You have all been in our hearts, minds, and prayers in these days. The grace you have shown in these incomprehensible moments is an inspiration to everyone. It is clear that the web of love, light, and brilliance that Austin and all of your family have extended and continue to extend into the world has changed it and made it a better, more generous, heartfelt place. As I read these tributes and we try to comprehend this moment, one line seems true: A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Austin clearly walked in beauty.
