I had an American History class with Austin in early 2013. At first, he was reserved and quiet, but as discussions became heated, he would step in with a pertinent point or illuminate a different side of an argument. I was struck by his empathy: in a class where we often debated larger trends in history, he thought in terms of individuals and their lives. It's easy to coast through school, and life, without truly wondering what is inside the minds of others, but Austin had a genuine curiosity about people. He is missed.
